A place to work

As kids, most of us dreaded the seemingly endless amount of homework and the hours upon hours of sitting at the kitchen table studying, memorizing and writing. As grownups, sometimes the tasks required by our jobs are not accomplished in an ordinary eight-hour day.

At some point, when we have outgrown the dining table as a work surface and if we have a spare room, we imagine a home office. Designing that work space should be an exercise in both function and aesthetics.Assess how much time you will spend working there. Is this your main office space, or is this just a work area to complete and check daily work and pay household bills? Besides a work surface or desk, consider what else you want, such as bookcases, storage, filing space, computer, electronics, lighting and appropriate seating.Make it appealing but not distracting. Select some art you enjoy, and get to work.by Joseph PubillonesCreators New ServiceAesthetic considerations are next. Your selection of wall colors, the finish on your case goods, such as desks and cabinets, and flooring - whether carpet, wood or tile - will determine the feel of your office. Do you prefer a warm clubby library, a cool high-tech contemporary look or sophisticated high-style glam feel? It's up to you.

AFA presenting replacement medal to Tuskegee Airmen pilot

When 87-year-old Franklin Macon thinks of his Tuskegee Airmen medal, he's reminded of how fortunate he was to receive his wings in a time when the military resisted black pilots. When the medal - awarded to famed World War II black pilots - was stolen from his house during a break-in on May 31, he didn't expect to get it back.

When Macon receives his replacement medal, which depicts pilots on the front and aircraft on the back, he said he'll store it somewhere special. But thanks to the efforts of the 21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Academy, Macon will receive a replacement at a ceremony today at the academy."I'll probably put a picture of it where it used to be," he laughed.Macon is the former president of the Hooks Jones Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., which recognizes the accomplishments of black pilots who served in World War II.A laptop and coins stored in old amno cans also were taken from Macon's home. No one has been arrested and the medal has not been recovered. The original Congressional Gold Medal was presented by President George W. Bush to the group of black pilots in a 2007 ceremony. It is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Bronze replicas were minted and offered to the Tuskegee Airmen chapters for purchase.Macon received his pilot's license in 12th grade. Several months after completing basic training with the Army Air Corps, he went to flight school in Tuskegee, Ala. A ruptured ear drum left him hospitalized in 1945, and when he was released, World War II was over. Macon taught gunnery to the remaining students, but never served in combat.Macon came home in late May to find the framework of his front door splayed across the living room and the medal missing from its spot on a bookcase among other Tuskegee Airmen memorabilia, including a wooden model of a plane he flew in training. He didn't imagine then that there would one day be black airline pilots, and said Eleanor Roosevelt helped break the barriers for blacks pursuing aviation."I looked over to where I had the medal and it was gone. I said, 'Oh brother,'" he said."I hate what happened, but I'm glad to get a new one," Macon said.

"I'll probably put a picture of it where it used to be," he laughed.

Bookcase Design Hasn't Changed Much Over The Centuries

After the advent of the printing press, when average people began to be literate and own books, there were no such things as bookcases. People simply put their books in cupboards, sometimes taking the doors off for easy access. Eventually woodworkers started making freestanding bookcases like the ones we see today.

Many bookcases that require assembly come with adjustable shelves, allowing the owner to accommodate books of unusually large or small heights. These bookcases are not generally of the highest quality, however, and may not be as visually pleasing as some of the more expensive ones. They are usually perfectly functional, though.Wood is still by far the most common material used to make bookcases. It's sturdy, handsome and traditional. Libraries often use metal shelves, but these lack the aesthetic appeal that most people want for their homes. Bookcases made of granite, marble or other materials are on the market, but their expense prevents them from being widely used.Bookcase design is fairly simple, and most consumers still prefer the standard "look" for both form and function. People who have hundreds of books in their possession usually want something sturdy and simple, elegant perhaps, but mostly focused on the basic task of holding the books.Other bookcases are shaped in a modern, stylish fashion, with shelves of different sizes and lengths. These are often more useful as decor than as bookcases, as they don't actually hold very many books. But if you don't have many books (or knickknacks, picture frames, etc.) to display, one of these modern designs may complement your home nicely.

Give Your Home Character With a Beautiful Bookcase

A good home needs good furniture to be complete. Quality furniture is the product of hard work and loving care, and the tradition of crafting quality furniture has been handed down over generations upon generations, perfected over millenia to give us the excellent pieces many of us currently enjoy in our homes. Of all the pieces of furniture we have in our homes, bookcases certainly occupy the most space on average, and the larger varieties would have to be among the most gargantuan pieces of furniture a person can have in their home. In fact, many are so incredibly formidable in size that they need to be brought into the home in pieces, assembled inside the designated room.

There are all kinds of bookcases to match different tastes and different home arrangements. Though traditionally there wasn't so much variation, today you can find barrister, ladder, wood or glass door, or even open bookcases. Of course, few things can compare to an antique oak bookcase: the quality and durability of the wood; the exactitude of the unions; the intricacy and detail in the craftsmanship are all details to be admired and prized. The mere value of an antique oak bookcase is enough for some people to want to have one in their home, but take a moment to think about whether or not the ones you come across will fit in nicely in your home. Will the colors combine well with the overall scheme of your home; does its size or dimensions present any possible problems; is it too short or too tall; etc. Don't rush into buying bookcases, but rather take your time until you come across just the right one. You'll know it when you do.In order to give your home character, it is absolutely essential to have at least a few top quality pieces of furniture, and the most dominant furniture in most people's homes (along with, say, the dining room table) would certainly have to be the bookcases. This particular piece of furniture reflects who we are, our tastes and level of education, more than any other, as the things we fill it with are incredibly telling about where we have been, what we do, what we know, and what we like. Bookcases are filled, more than with anything else, with books, of course; nonetheless, many people choose the bookcase as a place to display many other proud possessions, like family portraits, diplomas, mementos and trinkets, as well as gold and silver adornments. Yet, beyond what we fill it with, the quality of the piece of furniture in and of itself is perhaps the most telling thing of all.

Of course, if you plan to actually use your bookcase to store plenty of books and other items, make sure you are actually getting a solid item with strong planks, and not just some old piece of junk that will snap on you within the first few weeks of having things perched on its shelves. Though aesthetics are important, never forget to have functionality as a priority.

Making A Modular Book Shelf

Like most things building a coat rack or a modular book shelf that covers an entire wall is not that hard if you have the proper tools and a little know how. Using the modular technique you simple build the book shelf in sections and assemble them together on the wall. The first step is to do some measuring if your wall happens to be 12 feet long it is very simple you can either make 3 sections 4 feet wide or 4 sections 3 feet wide. It is probable best to go with the 4 sections this will require more material and work but a book shelf that is four feet long may not be so good at holding up books.

If you want to add a few extra touches then bargain stores often have a selection of scented candles - opt for light scents such as vanilla - and neutral ceramic vases that could be the homely additions you need.Add those finishing touches Don't think things are going to look cold and stark with plain walls. Use home accessories to create warming colours and tones.Alternatively, you could choose light colours such as creams with spring green accessories, giving the room a fresh, clean look.

The selves can be made again from MDF or plywood it is a good idea to add a piece of solid wood across the front this hides the edge of the plywood or MDF and adds some strength to the shelve.

Points to consider when selling your home

THERE are various points to consider when you put your house on the market.

A feeling of space Creating a feeling of space is important when selling your home. If a home is too overcrowded it's hard to see a property's potential.Alternatively, if you can't afford to put larger items in storage, ask a friend or relative if they're able to keep hold of some items for you.So, before viewing commences take a step back, analyse your space and perhaps tone down some of your rooms to a more neutral shade. You don't have to completely redecorate, but you want viewers to feel they could live in your home and the easier you make that process, the more chance of a sale.Lighter coloured walls create the feeling of space and allow rooms to seem brighter. The cases themselves are simple long boxes you can use a but joint on the corners and cut a rabbit joint in the back to accept a piece of inch plywood to add strength and stability. You will need to decide if you want adjustable shelving or fixed. With some proper planning most people can get away with fixed shelves as once the shelves are placed it is rare that they are ever moved again. Adjustable shelves can be done in one of two ways you can drill a series of holes that will accept a pin to support the shelve or you can install metal strips that allow for special clips to be inserted every inch or so to act as shelve supports.Case goods should always be at the top of the list when furnishing a room or home. There are always a variety of styles and colors to choose from, so no matter what, there will always be a style to compliment the homes decor. After all, if storing items increases your chances of a sale, isn't it worth it? Have you ever wandered into someone's house and been hit by an usual smell, whether it be a pleasant one or not? Make sure your house smells fresh First impressions are not only created with the eyes, but also our other senses such as our sense of smell. So when potential buyers are due to arrive, try a few tricks to ensure the right ambience.People don't want to be squeezing through doorways or around coffee tables. Many people have accumulated a whole range of accessories for their home over time, so, if you have some extra, try to use these in the rooms you're redecorating to save cash.Placing a vanilla pod in the oven and putting out fresh flowers can have the desired effect.Colour is a personal choice Bright tangerine or a wild patterned wallpaper may be to your taste, but the decor in your home could be off-putting to potential buyers. To avoid a potential buyer's first impression being one of clutter, why not place a few items in storage, thereby making rooms feel light and airy? Storage facilities come in a wide range of sizes, and many companies will be able to recommend the best size for the amount you want to store.Remember these visitors to your home are potential buyers so take all steps to make their visit a memorable one.Stale smoke and pet aromas are some of the biggest turn-offs so, if you smoke, try to do so outside from as soon as you put the house on the market, or before viewings place your pets outside and make sure you spray air-freshener around to mask the nasty smells.Opt for simple colours (nothing too harsh) like creams, browns or golds.Even putting items such as old clothing or unused toys into storage can create additional space. The cream gives the room a natural, simplistic look, while the browns and golds can bring a touch of warmth and character. He actual book cases and shelves can be made from MDF with a solid wood front edge if you plan on painting the bookcase if you want a stain then you may want to consider using plywood Birch, and Oak plywood is readily available at most home centers.Remember, you may have got used to certain aromas in your house and may not even notice that something smells particularly strongly.Maybe someone has a garage they don't use. If not, then at least ensure all your smaller items have a place in the home - no viewer wants to be moving around toys on the floor or shoes scattered in the hallway. In addition, try and ensure there is a clear path into each room.Whether it be a bulky bookcase, extra wardrobe or exercise equipment that gathers dust in the corner, it all makes a room look smaller.A chest of drawers is an essential element for any bedroom. They are very important for storing goods and other fine goods. A chest also serves as a vanity which can be doubled with a large mirror as well as baskets on the counter space for storing items. A chest of drawers can also serve as a TV stand. Why add another piece of furniture to a room when the television can simply be mounted on top a chest of drawers? Using furniture for multiple purposes makes room for other things.Book cases are a great design element to add to any room. If there are lots of books to store or put on display, they can be showcased on the bookcases. Bookcases can also be decorated with other home furnishing accessories. By adding a picture frame, some flowers, candles, decorative book ends, and bookcase can really enhance the look of the room. Also use fabrics to drape over or around the book shelf to create soft edges and give the room a cozy feeling. It's the nasty smells that could put potential purchaser off.The selves can be made again from MDF or plywood it is a good idea to add a piece of solid wood across the front this hides the edge of the plywood or MDF and adds some strength to the shelve.Cushions, mirrors, new furnishings such as bedding, pictures etc are all ways to make your rooms feel inviting. So by following a few simple ideas, your home could have all the right odours to aid a sale.At the bottom of your new bookcase most people have the baseboard trim extend on the bookcase this gives the built in look so you will need to build up the base which is simple enough build a base out of MDF medium density fiberboard that is the correct height to set you new bookcase on. At the ceiling it is a good idea to either finish or top out the book case with a crown molding or with a final trim piece that is somewhat adjustable. I have never found a ceiling that is 100 percent straight or flat. The other reason you need some additional room is that you would not be able to get your new bookcases in with out a little gap at the top so plan on this from the beginning and you should be al right.

Remember these visitors to your home are potential buyers so take all steps to make their visit a memorable one.

Put Your Books Inside A Modern Slick Looking Bookcases

One more time I am having the issue of book cases. What ought to I do? Ought to I go ahead and buy or ought to I build or ought to I depart all the thousands of books I've in boxes? You know why I am worried? I am shifting as soon as once more. This is what happens every time I move. I am usually in need of a brand new place of abode that would provide some sanity and exactly where I can remain permanently. I've to move every time both because of a insane landlord or a roommate who is drunk, passive, aggressive, insane or even a thief. I truly hate going via the stressful packing process. My books now remain in boxes throughout this period exactly where I am not sure if the house is permanent or at least lengthy lasting. I only put individuals I need on bookcases which are even makeshift bricks and boards. Some cases they are milk crates or cardboard boxes.

Each menu blends the approachable with the challenging. "Approachable" might mean a Vodka Cobbler, blending freshly muddled blueberries, blackberries and raspberries with fresh lemon juice, Lillet Blonde, Prairie vodka and a dash of orange bitters; "challenging" a Broad Street Bully, with egg white, pineapple, Cynar and Rittenhouse 100 proof rye.Stephanie Stewart-Howard is a Nashville resident and managing editor of Nashville Lifestyles.Bays and Alcovecases stick out at right angles into the room. This system of bookcase arrangement is both visually appealing and allows the advantageous use of space.

The 19th century ended using the Objective Style bookcases, as part of the practical Objective Style sets of furniture. They are able to now be discovered in most houses, all thanks to the connection and influence of the Arts and Crafts motion that is spreading. This motion was needless to say, engineered within the 1920s by inventive beings such as William Morris, Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright. Today, the book cases which are the greatest options are individuals that have easy lines and are made solidly.

Cocktail couture: Nashville's The Patterson House brilliantly challenges your cocktail palate

Walking into Patterson House, you take in a 1920s vibe, whisked through a deep aqua velvet drape to an intimate bar space with a vast dark wood bar, high stools, cozy booths and a plethora of antique mirrors. Tall bookcases overflow with real books as well as with bottles of house wines, of which there are only a few, and serving supplies. You've arrived and the joint's jumping--Nashville's Patterson House speakeasy, tucked into a bustling area of Midtown, is generally hopping, even if you opt for the carefully hidden back patio when seasonally appropriate.

Lastly, you are able to join me as I breathe a sigh of relief. Now, I am about to buy my personal home. After residing away from Mommy and Daddy for twenty-nine years and after shifting from one home to the other thirty-something occasions, I am going to be obtaining my personal home. I am now happy for my poor books as now they can get a breather too. Thankfully they've escaped the mildew, bookworms, and so on. What I will do now is to put them respectfully in book cases. Ought to I put them on built-ins? How about on prefabricated book cases? I've plenty of options, but I am also confronted using the next dilemma of - which book cases style will go along with it. You will find endless options, truly, particularly when one considers the inside decorating types such as the modern, French, Mediterranean, and so on. There's also the baroque and Goth and traditional and objective and eclectic, and so on.I appear to choose the sturdy and understated of the Objective Style book cases. You know why? These bookcases came into existence way before the initial bookcases had been ever created. Today they take their influence from their purpose and their history. For Objective Style furniture, this really is utilitarian at greatest. They're aiming for distinctive beverages that tell a story across the palate, with a definite beginning, middle and end: "Complementary certainly, but also with mirroring aspects, so a drink has differentiation, but works all together--not a one note song," says Hensley. The oldest bookcases in England date back to the late-sixteenth century. The Bodleian Library at Oxford University displays the earliest extant samples of bookcase galleries over walls. These long ranges appear somewhat striking, and cornices and pilasters were attempted many times to be carved in the bookcases to reduce their rather plain appearance. It wasnt until the late-eighteenth century when some English cabinet makers successfully accomplished this task.High heels click across hardwoods; crystal fixtures shimmer overhead. The demographic for Patterson House depends upon the hour. Early evenings, find the mature types in for their serious rye cocktails, but by the time you hit 11:30, mid-30s is more the average, 20s even--the cocktails are still smart, if oh-so-slightly less challenging. All cocktails come in at $ 11, so you know what you're getting up front. You won't find any "house" brands, these libations require premium-or super-premium, and the set fee balances the cost. Patterson House understands brand influences taste, and what's behind the bar changes with each menu. Every individual spirit has its best use, in their philosophy.Wall-Placementthis bookcase arrangement places shelves along the walls and allows for open space and ample movement from one bookcase to another, and all bookcases are easily accessible.Mobile Aisle Shelvingthis bookcase arrangement system features tightly packed books on shelves mounted on wheels. Only a couple of shelves are accessible at a time and set so they can be moved at will and necessity. This bookcase arrangement is utilized when space is limited and stationary bookcases would restrict book-seeker movement and cut off access to other bookcases. But ultimately, it's about the cocktail. "If you enjoy a specific drink, say a Manhattan or a Sazerac, we can make you the best you've ever had," says Max Goldberg. "If you're new to cocktails, put your faith in us to provide you with an experience like nothing else and turn you into a fan of what we do."History of the BookcaseYou'll discover a vast number of flavored bitters, many house made, and locally sourced brands (new for spring, look for barrel-aged cocktails, with barrels sourced from the nearby Corsair Artisan micro-distillery) and various Tennessee whiskeys. An exceptional sipping list ranges from moderate ($9 for a 12 ounce shot) to pricey ($27 for an exceptional aged whiskey). It's not a wine drinker's paradise, though there's a rotating selection of very drinkable whites, reds and sparklings (three each, at $12 a glass) every season. A rotating selection of about 8 beers (at $5 to $6) fills out the menu.It was only after the 17th century that book cases became purposefully crafted. This was when the English readers discovered the need for retaining and collecting books. That led to the use of bookcases in colleges and libraries, and houses of scholars and book lovers, according to the compilers of the Antique Collector's Dictionary. The reading and studying world have because picked up and passed on the book situation building tradition. For instance, Georgian breakfront (a.k.a. wing) book cases had been built). These had been adopted by "upper stage glazed" bookcases. Then there had been the Regency period dwarf bookcases.IT'S ALL IN THE MIX

Book Cases Come In Different Shapes And Sizes

Bookcases are metal or wooden structures, square or rectangular, with horizontally spaced shelves that are designed to hold books in an organized fashion. Bookcases usually stand against walls, but sometimes, as in the case of libraries and book stores, they stand centered or out in the open and back-to-back for book-seekers to encircle as they look for books on either side.

"We always challenge people," says an assured Hensley. "Fans and regular customers continue on a journey through cocktails." Driven by temperatures, Patterson House's cold and warm weather cocktails are different things, so they offer season-inspired Sazeracs and Sidecars, for example. Warm weather invites lighter flavors and summer fruits; cold brings darker, heavier, richer feels. Right now, in demand is the Yellow Rose of Texas, flush with Blanco Tequila, Yellow Chartreuse, lemon and rose water. Today, the book cases which are the greatest options are individuals that have easy lines and are made solidly.Bookcases can be arranged in four systems: wall-placement, parallel stacks or ranges, in bays or alcoves, and mobile aisle shelving. The brainchild of entrepreneurial brothers Benjamin and Max Goldberg some two years past, Patterson House became Music City's first real foray into speakeasy culture and continues to embrace a forward-thinking cocktail attitude.Of course, house-made, from scratch bar bites are de rigueur here. The city's mad about the warm cinnamon doughnuts. But Shrimp Corndogs with Curried Ketchup, Mini-Burgers with House-Made Pimento Cheese and Caramelized Onion and sweet/spicy/herbed bar nuts all have their places (all bar food runs $5 per plate)."We get a fair number of foodie types in here, especially when we get publicity," says general manager James Hensley. Quality Book Cases

Here I am again dealing with the book cases issue once again. Should I slight build some, by some, or just leave all the books and their boxes? The problem is that it is moving time again. It seems as if every time I move my host of regenerated that the new residence will offer some normalcy, some sanity, some degree of permanency.

But finally, after twenty-nine years of living away from mom and dad's house and after thirty-something moving episodes, I am going to finally buy a place of my own. Those poor books that have been relegated to such harsh treatment in the past will finally find a sanctuary of their own.But in reality I find within a few weeks of starting to unpack that the landlord or roommate is a total whackjob, passive aggressive, a drug addict, or a thief and I I am forced to yet again go through the unenviable process all over again. Because of this the books now usually stay in their boxes during this probationary period, and only those I have the most immediate need for get placed on makeshift bookcases constructed of bricks and boards, milk crates, or sometimes even the cardboard boxes they are already injust flipped to their open sides so I can easily check the contents.Another option is having shelves built directly into the walls of your home. This is almost always done when the home is being built, though it is possible to add them after the fact. Built-in shelves save space, obviously, and are sturdier than even the strongest freestanding bookcases. (There's no way to knock over built-in shelves unless you knocked the whole house over!) They are especially prized in small apartments or homes where space is otherwise at a premium. It's an option worth considering when looking for a new home. These pre-fab storage units usually function well enough as bookcases, CDs racks or knickknack holders, but they lack the elegance and stateliness of the old-fashioned bookcases. They are usually made of cheaper material, too, and are not nearly as sturdy. They work well if you only have a couple dozen books to display, which is common today, as many consumers own far more CDs and DVDs than books anyway. If you have a large library of books, a more traditional bookcase may be in order. The price range on these bookcases run the gamut, all the way from hand-crafted mahogany cases to less costly but still elegant shelves available at places like Pier 1 or Pottery Barn. The difference between them and the "entertainment storage units" is that these bookcases are usually made of higher quality wood and have the look of a traditional bookcase. The more expensive ones come already assembled and finished, but you can get very nice-looking some-assembly-required bookcases for a reasonable price.

At the close of the 19th century, Mission style bookcases, part of the pragmatic Mission style furniture set, were readily available in homes due for the most part to the influences of the Arts and Crafts movement that was evolving, pioneered by such great creative minds as William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Frank Lloyd Wright through the 1920s. But we ended up with were book cases of simple, elegant lines and solid construction may be the smartest choice for my needs, regardless of if I happen to stay in one place or have to move yet again.

Bookcases: What Kind Do You Need?

In our modern, multi-media world, the idea of a "bookcase" is almost quaint. The items many people use as bookcases are sold as "entertainment storage units" and can also be used for CDs, DVDs and other media. These often come with adjustable shelves (to accommodate the variance in height between CDs and books) and are sold unassembled at places like Wal-Mart and Target.

They will be shelved on book cases. The question is what kind. On built-ins? On prefabricated book cases? On old eclectic choices I find while antique shopping for metal or wood or those ubiquitous pressboard book cases? God willing, they may even be displayed on brand new book cases. But theres the biggest dilemma: which style book cases to go with? The options are endless, really, considering the interior decorating styles: theres modern contemporary, French, Mediterranean. Theres baroque and Goth, theres traditional, and theres mission and eclectic and shabby chic.At the close of the 19th century, Mission style bookcases, part of the pragmatic Mission style furniture set, were readily available in homes due for the most part to the influences of the Arts and Crafts movement that was evolving, pioneered by such great creative minds as William Morris, Gustav Stickley, and Frank Lloyd Wright through the 1920s. A place to work

As kids, most of us dreaded the seemingly endless amount of homework and the hours upon hours of sitting at the kitchen table studying, memorizing and writing. As grownups, sometimes the tasks required by our jobs are not accomplished in an ordinary eight-hour day.

"I hate what happened, but I'm glad to get a new one," Macon said.by Joseph PubillonesThe original Congressional Gold Medal was presented by President George W. Bush to the group of black pilots in a 2007 ceremony. It is now on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. Bronze replicas were minted and offered to the Tuskegee Airmen chapters for purchase.Other bookcases are shaped in a modern, stylish fashion, with shelves of different sizes and lengths. These are often more useful as decor than as bookcases, as they don't actually hold very many books. But if you don't have many books (or knickknacks, picture frames, etc.) to display, one of these modern designs may complement your home nicely. When Macon receives his replacement medal, which depicts pilots on the front and aircraft on the back, he said he'll store it somewhere special."I'll probably put a picture of it where it used to be," he laughed.

A laptop and coins stored in old amno cans also were taken from Macon's home. No one has been arrested and the medal has not been recovered. To Macon, the bronze replica of the Tuskegee Airmen Congressional Gold Medal symbolizes how far minorities have come since the 996 pilots graduated.Wood is still by far the most common material used to make bookcases. It's sturdy, handsome and traditional. Libraries often use metal shelves, but these lack the aesthetic appeal that most people want for their homes. Bookcases made of granite, marble or other materials are on the market, but their expense prevents them from being widely used.He didn't imagine then that there would one day be black airline pilots, and said Eleanor Roosevelt helped break the barriers for blacks pursuing aviation. Some innovations have been made, however. A fairly recent shift in bookcase design has the shelves at the bottom much deeper than the ones at the top, tapering up as they go. This design, aside from being visually appealing, is great for homes with small children because it makes it virtually impossible for the bookcase to be tipped over.Assess how much time you will spend working there. Is this your main office space, or is this just a work area to complete and check daily work and pay household bills? Besides a work surface or desk, consider what else you want, such as bookcases, storage, filing space, computer, electronics, lighting and appropriate seating. At some point, when we have outgrown the dining table as a work surface and if we have a spare room, we imagine a home office. Designing that work space should be an exercise in both function and aesthetics.Aesthetic considerations are next. Your selection of wall colors, the finish on your case goods, such as desks and cabinets, and flooring - whether carpet, wood or tile - will determine the feel of your office. Do you prefer a warm clubby library, a cool high-tech contemporary look or sophisticated high-style glam feel? It's up to you.Macon received his pilot's license in 12th grade. Several months after completing basic training with the Army Air Corps, he went to flight school in Tuskegee, Ala. A ruptured ear drum left him hospitalized in 1945, and when he was released, World War II was over. Macon taught gunnery to the remaining students, but never served in combat.Macon came home in late May to find the framework of his front door splayed across the living room and the medal missing from its spot on a bookcase among other Tuskegee Airmen memorabilia, including a wooden model of a plane he flew in training."I looked over to where I had the medal and it was gone. I said, 'Oh brother,'" he said.

But thanks to the efforts of the 21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Base and the Air Force Academy, Macon will receive a replacement at a ceremony today at the academy.Creators New ServicePlanning is crucial. List all your necessary equipment, down to the linear feet of filing space required. Measure all computer equipment and note ventilation requirements. Draw a layout of your room and overlay different furniture scenarios to help you sort out your preferences. This phase of your project will help identify problems that can be ironed out before any major purchases or costly mistakes are made.Macon is the former president of the Hooks Jones Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., which recognizes the accomplishments of black pilots who served in World War II.

Many bookcases that require assembly come with adjustable shelves, allowing the owner to accommodate books of unusually large or small heights. These bookcases are not generally of the highest quality, however, and may not be as visually pleasing as some of the more expensive ones. They are usually perfectly functional, though.
